DISTANCE LEARNING AND INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
MONTESSORI ECD PRE-PRIMARY (3–6 YEARS) NATIONAL DIPLOMA LEVEL 5 (23118)
The Correspondence Course makes it possible for those with other commitments to engage in a comprehensive study of Montessori theory and educational philosophy, the methodology and an overview of other important educational philosophies. On enrolling for the distance learning course, you are assigned a designated tutor who offers you support throughout the course. If you allocate approximately 10 hours per week, you should be able to complete the academic component (all assignments and portfolios) within one year. (Note: you must complete all coursework within 18 months of registration). As an integral part, a minimum of 60 hours of practice and three Directed Observations are necessary for the completion of the course. The precise directions and sequence for these various observations are to be found, together with the assignments, in your study notes. Please read them before attempting an observation!
Students who wish to work as a teaching assistant in a Montessori school may exit at this point with a Montessori Assistant Certificate. That is, when you have successfully completed all coursework and portfolios and the compulsory practice hours with the materials you will be awarded a Montessori Assistant Certificate. The Certificate has to be completed within 18 months of your initial registration.
Compulsory workshops are held for those students who wish to exit with the full diploma. The workshops will be held in Cape Town with possible satellite workshops in other parts of the country and Africa once there is adequate demand. Other workshops in your area during the course of your study are recommended for your training, but are not mandatory for this programme. Additional workshops and seminars are offered by the ELF centre throughout the year. A detailed timetable may be emailed to you on request. When you have successfully completed the Academic Component, the Teaching Practical component, the compulsory 40 hours workshops, the practical and written examinations and the compulsory practice hours with the materials you will be awarded the National Diploma ECD Level 5: 23118. The Diploma has to be completed within three years of your initial registration.
